I sewed a palazzo jumpsuit for myself, and am incredibly happy with it.
A while back, I sewed a PJ Jones McCalls jumpsuit. I love the way it looks on the pattern envelope, and after it was finished, it looked fantastic on my dress form. When I put it on, I loved the way the pant legs swished, and how comfy it was.
BUT I didn't like the way it looked on me. I looked like a blob and a slob. It was so disheartening. I'm an hourglass and I should have known it wasn't going to work for me. I actually did know this, but hope springs eternal, and I thought I could make it work. Nope.
When doing some online window shopping for pieces I might want to sew for myself, I came across a Michael Kors palazzo jumpsuit. Gorgeous!!! The wide leg width made me think of the PJ Jones jumpsuit. Hmmm.
And when I looked at vintage patterns online, I came across this one for a palazzo jumpsuit.
Ok, it pushed me over the edge. I decided to make a palazzo jumpsuit for myself.
Since I was sewing mine, I could choose the style elements. I really love the way the PJ Jones jumpsuit looks, so I made mine with the same sundressy straps, but I needed mine to be flattering, so I went with a fitted bodice and waist definition. I love combining patterns and frankenpatterned OOP Simplicity 4885 for the bodice, and Vogue 9075 for the bottom, still in the pattern books:
My jumpsuit is the same as the denim rompers that I made not too long ago:
If you want to sew a jumpsuit similar to mine, you can use the bodice from Simplicity 9917:My palazzo jumpsuit is swishy, and comfy, but the bodice is fitted, has waist definition, and is flattering on me. It has a back zipper, a pocket on each side, is easy to wear, easy to get in and out of, and the swishiness is so FUN!
I'm so glad I decided to make this because I absolutely love it! AND it barely cost me anything.
I always stock up on notions and already had the thread and interfacing. I used a previously used zipper (yes, when I toss things, I save zippers and buttons). They all came from my stash, so I'm not counting the cost of those things.
I'm not putting a dollar value on the time I spent on this, or the wear and tear on my machines, because this is my hobby.
The fabric came from Walmart. I bought 2 packs of jersey fabric that cost $8 per pack. Each pack was for 3 yards of 60" wide knit jersey. My jumpsuit took 3 1/2 yards. So this jumpsuit cost me $9.31. I love sewing for myself.
I have 2 1/2 yards left and am planning to make a fun top with it. That's up next.
Taking off now.
Until next time, be safe and please take care of yourself!
