I Made a Pair of Wide Legged Pants for Myself

I wanted to make a pair of wide legged pants, but wasn't sure about how wide the legs should be to look flattering on my petite 5'1" self. Too wide and it would have overwhelmed me and made me look like I was wearing someone else's clothes. I just didn't know, so I decided to sew a pair of pants with a vintage junior petite pattern. Junior Petite patterns are drafted for people who are 5'1" tall, that's exactly my height!

I used the pants pattern from McCalls 2546. The size 9 fits me perfectly!

On the pattern envelope, the pants look like they're straight legged pants, but they look like moderately wide legged pants on me. After I finished the first one in a teal green, and tried it on, I absolutely loved it! I loved it so much that I made an ivory one, a black one and a forest green one.

The pants are all made of knits, and have an elastic waist, which I actually like. Elastic waists are so comfy!

If you are a petite and are wondering how wide the legs should be to be wide legged and flattering, the width of my pants are 23 inches. The pant width is originally drafted to be 21 1/2 inches, but I decided to add a little more to the width, and if it turned out too wide, I was just going to remove the extra that I added. Turns out 23 inches is perfect!

I'm making one more, in a gray knit.

Take a look at the ones I've made - teal green, ivory, forest green, black:

I'm just now getting into wide legged pants, and was thinking I'd make some woven tops to wear with them. I'm working on a denim vest that I think will go perfectly with all of the pants. The pattern I'm using is vintage Simplicity 8298, another junior petite pattern.

I'm also going to make OOP McCalls 5278, the blue one on the pattern envelope. I think it will wear well with wide legged pants.

That's it for now.

Be well!
