New Look 6546 - My Best Tank Top Pattern!!!

I bought New Look 6546 for the tank only back in July of 2024. I didn't sew it right away because I thought it might end up being a wadder. But I finally got around to making a muslin and was soo surprised at how well this fit. I loved it so much that I made a bunch of them!!! The pattern is out of print, but you can still find it at online shops.

What I really love about this pattern is that it's close fitting. Take a look at the garment measurements above and you will see exactly how much negative ease it has. A lot of tank patterns are have a much looser fit, but not this one! It's so nicely fitted.

The pattern is also drafted to have neck and armhole bands. A lot of patterns have neck bands, but patterns with armhole bands are much harder to find.

THE PICK A KNIT RULE - You can find a pick a knit rule on the back of the envelope. Because of the close fit, I definitely used it. What I discovered is that the more beyond the stretch line my knit stretched, the better the fit turned out. When my fabric just barely made the stretch line, the tank ended up being a little too tight for my comfort. I don't wear really tight clothes, so it was history.

I also shortened the neck band a smidge, to avoid a rippling effect.

Right now, I prefer my tanks to be regular length. The pattern is drafted for a longer tank, so I shortened it by 2 - 3 inches.

If you sew this, be sure to make a muslin first, so you'll end up with a perfect tank top!

I cut an XS at the neckline and armhole, then went up to the S at the sides.

I sewed several, but it wasn't a chore because the sewing was easy and it didn't take much time. My all season basic colors, red-white-navy are taken care of. And I have some of my summer colors present, too, aqua-pink-yellow. I made 2 in autumn colors, and am planning to make a few more in the autumn colors of my true winter seasonal color palette.

I love tanks to layer under a topper, so the more in my wardrobe, the merrier!

Here what I have so far:

That's all I have for now!

These are uncertain time for sure. Be well and please take care of yourself and  your loved ones out there.

See you next time!
